Young people encouraged to join the fun at the Birregurra Skate Park

Young people can grab their scooters, skateboards and bikes and head to Birregurra for a free day of fun, skills and competitions this Sunday.

The YMCA’s Skate Park League is coming to Birregurra Skate Park on Sunday 9 February, featuring a scooter, BMX and skateboarding competition, with four age categories, from under-10s to 16 years and over.

Free skateboard and scooter lessons will let keen kids try skating or scooting for the first time, and beginners can brush up on their skills, with all equipment provided.

Colac Otway Shire Mayor Jason Schram said the event would be held in conjunction with the Birregurra Sunday Markets Family Fun Day, providing something for everyone.

“It’s going to be a fantastic day in Birregurra for the whole family,” he said.

“It’s a great opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the skills and talents of our young people, as well as provide an opportunity for people to get active and try something new through the scoot and skateboarding lessons.

“There’ll also be facepainting, the BeeBop circus and a variety of market stalls from 9am – 2pm as part of the Sunday Markets Family Fun Day for everyone to enjoy.

“We’re very fortunate to be working with great partners like the YMCA and the Birregurra Community Group to make Sunday, 9 February a fun and inclusive day for all in Birregurra,” Cr Schram said.

The YMCA will raffle prize packs for participants including skateboard decks and wheels, BMX seats and pedals, scooter grips and wheels, as well as shoes and other apparel. Medals will also be on offer for placegetters.

Competition entrants will also receive an invite to compete in the 2025 Skate Park League national finale in Melbourne in March.

The skate and scoot lessons will take place from 9am – 11am. The scoot, BMX and skate competition will run from 11am – 4pm.

Participants can also sign up on the day - parents or guardians will need to sign all relevant paperwork for entrants under 18 years of age.

Council is presenting the event through the Victorian Government’s Engage! grants program and VicHealth Local Government Partnership.
