Work Progresses on Velodrome Upgrade
Work is progressing on the upgrade of the Colac’s regional velodrome at Elliminyt Recreation Reserve, with the project on track for completion in time for the first football match of the season.
The project to resurface the velodrome is being funded with a $320,000 Federal Government Community Development Grant and will improve safety and create a high-quality track for the Colac Cycling Club and visiting cyclists.
Colac Otway Shire Council’s Infrastructure & Leisure Services General Manager Tony McGann said contractors had started on-site demolition and removed the old asphalt this week.
“Council undertook geotechnical investigations and completed drainage work at the reserve last year to reduce water logging and ensure the longevity of the new velodrome surface,” Mr McGann.
“There will be some disruption for the Colac Cycling Club while the upgrade work is carried out but the outcome will be a safer, competition-standard velodrome which will be a great boost for the club and cycling.
“Council is reminding people who like to come down and walk the dog or play on the oval that it is temporarily closed to the public, except for scheduled club training sessions.
“South Colac Football Netball Club has been advised that teams can continue to use the oval and courts for training but we are urging players to take care accessing the oval because the track surface is a construction site.
“We have been working with all the users of the reserve throughout the planning for this project and appreciate their support,” he said.
“Council will continue to provide updates to user groups on the project and look forward to completion of the project by March 27 for South Colac’s first home game of the season.”
