Stormwater strategy out for community feedback

Colac Otway Shire Council is working with the community to finalise a major strategy to manage Colac’s stormwater network for the next thirty years.

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Peter Brown says developing a Colac Stormwater Development Strategy is essential for the city’s existing residents and business owners, industry and infrastructure.

“However the strategy will also be important for our community’s future growth, in conjunction with the development of the Colac 2050 Growth Plan which is designed to cater for Colac’s projected population increase,” Mr Brown said.

“Council has been working hard with the community to develop the draft strategy, and now we are ready to show everyone and ask for feedback.

“The strategy looks at challenges, including land near waterways and in low-lying areas, and what Council and landowners can do to reduce flooding.

“When we finalise the Colac Stormwater Development Strategy, it will allow Council to improve drainage and stormwater infrastructure in Colac’s existing residential and commercial areas over time, as well as plan for future development,” he said.

“We know people with an interest in our plans to develop and improve Colac’s stormwater system will have questions, and that’s why we are hosting information sessions.”

The Colac Stormwater Development Strategy can be viewed on the Council website or we encourage residents and business owners to come to our strategy information sessions on November 7 and 18.

Council will host its November 7 sessions in Murray Street, near Johnstone’s Lane, from 11am to 1pm, and from 3pm to 6pm at COPACC, with a third session from 10am to 1pm on November 18 at the Colac Sunday Market at Colac Showgrounds.

Community members can make submissions for Council to consider as part of the process before adoption of the strategy, with submissions closing on December 14.

Residents and ratepayers can also expect to receive a brochure in the mail explaining more about the draft Colac Stormwater Development Strategy, along with details about community consultation on the Colac 2050 Growth Plan.

Anyone who is unable to attend an information session can contact the Council’s infrastructure unit to make an appointment and talk to Council officers about the important strategy for Colac’s future.
