Colac Otway Shire Council is searching for the owner of Chihuahua, which wandered onto to a property at Barongarook more than 10 days ago.

Council’s Environment & Infrastructure General Manager Tony McGann said Council urged people who knew owners of Chihuahuas in the area, or who may have visited the area to check in with them and see if their dog was missing.

“The dog wandered onto a property in Johnson’s Road at Barongarook on the weekend of January 30-31. He has a microchip but with no information linking to an owner,” Mr McGann said.

“We regularly find dogs found wandering and if they are registered and it is the first time they have been out we can often return them home without them having to spend time at the pound and a search for owners.

“The community is very supportive of our animal management work and people will share lost dog posts on social media, usually with good results.

“However this involves Council resources and costs, and costs to dog owners which could be avoided if pets were registered and microchipped.

“In the six months from July 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020, Council returned 61 dogs who were registered to their homes without impounding. These dogs were first time offenders and the owner or someone else was home at the property when we visited to return them.

“Registering your dog and making sure your details are up to date on their microchip record is the best way to make sure if your dog did wander, they will make it home again.”

Anyone who has information about the Chihuahua is urged to contact Council’s Local Laws Community Safety on 52329400
