Reduce waste with Council’s reusable produce bag initiative
Colac Otway Shire Council is supporting the reduction of plastic waste in our community with a reusable produce bag initiative.
The reusable produce bags offer an earth-friendly alternative to plastic disposable fruit and vegetable bags and are sustainably produced from recycled plastic bottles.
Currently, more than 10 million plastic bags are used in Australia each day causing problems in our oceans, killing sea life and clogging the stomachs of many birds. Plastic bags have also become a serious waste problem.
Mayor Joe McCracken said Council were happy to support the initiative by subsidising part of the cost of the purchase price of the reusable bags.
“85 per cent of soft plastics from bags and packaging finish up in landfill. Reducing waste by choosing not to use single-use plastic bags is a positive step in the right direction.
“Choosing reusable produce bags, being careful with our recycling, selecting sustainable products – these are all actions we can take to Keep Australia Beautiful. Council is right behind our community’s efforts to reduce waste going to landfill,” he said.
The reusable bags are available for purchase from Monday 27 August at Council offices in Apollo Bay and Colac.
