Colac Otway Shire Council is seeking feedback from business operators and community members on a proposal to provide designated bus parks in central Colac.

Some local businesses have raised concerns about buses parking in the area near the intersection of Murray and Grant streets.

Community feedback indicates that local motorists have found it difficult to navigate the area while parking, with tourist buses and coaches at times occupying multiple car spaces.

Council is exploring different solutions to provide designated bus parking in the area. The proposed solution, which is available to view on Council’s website, is to:

• convert three car parking spaces in front of 229-239 Murray Street into two new bus parking spaces, and

• convert three car parking spaces on the east side of Grant Street next to the intersection, into two designated bus parking spaces.

The bus parks would have a one-hour parking limit, with signs indicating the parks are only for buses and for vehicles towing caravans and trailers.

General Manager Infrastructure and Environment Doug McNeill encouraged motorists and affected businesses to look at the proposal and indicate whether the change is supported or opposed. People who oppose the proposal can provide reasons for their concerns.

“The proposal aims to ensure local motorists can have quick and convenient access to businesses, while also allowing tourist buses to patronise local traders,” Mr McNeill said.

“Providing safe, accessible and convenient parking is part of our ongoing commitment to enhancing the local community experience,” he said.

Community members interested in providing their feedback on the proposal can visit the Have Your Say section on Council’s website, email inq@colacotway.vic.gov.au or post to Colac Otway Shire Council, PO Box 283, Colac 3250.

The survey will be open for three weeks, from 6 January 2025 to 24 January 2025.

Council will also send letters to nearby business owners/managers encouraging them to complete the survey.
