Colac Memorial Square’s new playspace was officially opened today by the Hon Dan Tehan MP, Federal Member for Wannon, and the Hon. Gayle Tierney, State Member for Western Victoria, alongside Colac Otway Shire Council Mayor Kate Hanson.
“We’re a very welcoming community in Colac and this innovative, modern playspace reflects well on our town with its improved amenity and accessibility,” said Mayor Hanson. “It has become the town’s unofficial community hub and a meeting place for families both from within the shire and also those visiting.”
The project was funded through an Australian Government investment of $300,000 via its Building Better Regions Fund, a Victorian Government investment of $250,000 via its Community Sports Infrastructure Fund and a contribution from Council of almost $172,000.
“Businesses are already benefitting from the town’s new drawcard as families come into the CBD,” said Mayor Hanson. “It’s given people a reason to stay longer in our central business district.”
The new playspace has a poppy-themed main play structure, a nod to the square’s significance as a war memorial, as well as accessible pathways, play and musical equipment and age-specific equipment to cater for all ages from toddlers through to teenagers.
The nature-play elements under and around existing trees and new plantings improve the amenity and feel of the space, while the installation of park furniture, including bench seating, picnic settings and a drinking fountain, help to create a space where people want to gather.
“The importance of being able to provide a place where children can play, run and explore is integral to encouraging healthy lifestyles,” said Mayor Hanson. “It also opens up a world of imagination away from the screens for children to develop coordination, strength and motor skills.”
The old playspace, which had been originally built by Rotary has been resettled in the Philippines, thanks to the work of the Rotary Club of Colac West, the Rotay Club of Colac and Otway Rotaract, and through the Rotary Overseas Recycled Playgrounds initiative.
