Call Before You Clear
Published on 26 February 2021
Colac Otway Shire Council has launched a new ‘Call Before You Clear’ campaign to help landowners understand the importance of protecting native vegetation across our iconic shire and learn what and why regulations apply.
Council is urging landowners and residents to seek advice before clearing or trimming any native vegetation to prevent damaging our environment and potentially committing an offence under environmental and planning regulations.
Under the Department of Environment, Land, Water & Planning's Permitted Clearing of Native Vegetation – Biodiversity Assessment Guidelines, a permit is required to remove, destroy or lop native vegetation.
Colac Otway Shire’s Planning Scheme provides regulations which aim to preserve, protect and conserve native vegetation, reduce the degradation on land, improve water quality and provide valuable habitat for plants and animals.
Council’s Planning Team can provide advice on what approvals are required – including under any environment overlays on your property, and what exemptions may apply to native vegetation removal.
