New 40kmh speed zones will help improve safety for motorists and pedestrians throughout Colac’s central business district.

Colac Otway Shire Council will be installing 40kmh speed limit signs in the CBD in coming weeks.

The reduced speeds aim to slow down traffic and reduce the risk of collisions and improve traffic flow.

Changes will apply to the area bounded by Skene Street and Dennis Street, Queen Street, Rae Street, and Scott Street.  It will include parts of Gellibrand Street, Corangamite Street, Miller Street and Scott Street, Bromfield Street and Connor Street.

Council-managed roads in the area currently have 50kmh or 60kmh limits, except Murray Street where the limit reduced to 40kmh last year.

Community members had an opportunity to comment on the revised speed limit in April 2024. Submissions showed broad support for a speed limit reduction in central Colac.

Council received funding from the State Government’s Safer Local Roads and Streets Program to implement the 40kmh limit and install new signs.

The Colac CBD and Entrance Strategy 2012 recommended the 40kmh speed limit to ensure amenity and safety for all road users and encourage walking and cycling. Recent consultation has backed the change.

Similar 40kmh zones are now widespread throughout Victoria.

“The Colac community has told us they want action to ensure our CBD streets are safe for everyone. Council has heard the calls for lower speed limits in this area.

“This change will aim to improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike, fostering a pedestrian-friendly environment and smooth traffic flow through the centre of Colac.”
