Looking after yourself

Traumatic and stressful events can have long term impacts on people’s emotional health and well-being.

People who seek help and support from family, friends, doctors, or other support organisations generally recover better from stressful situations.

Most people will recover from their stress and anxiety with proper access to information and support. If you or your family needs extra support, begin by reading the Better Health Channel's emotional support fact sheet. https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/conditionsandtreatments/trauma-reaction-and-recovery

Where to get help

Speak with your doctor in the first instance.
Everyone’s treatment needs will be different and you and your doctor should work out what care plan or treatment options are best for you and your family.
You may also consider contacting a cultural or religious organisations who may be able to provide advice or support.
